he never met the...Alice because he wasn't alive then. Shortly after the happenings of Looking-Glass, the Mad Hatter died. Some time later, this fellow here took the name by making a reputation of himself.

Wonderlanders die, but the names live on. Because really, no one's got a name in Wonderland. Not really.
